Walking on the Franz Josef glacier in New Zealand is a unique experience that’s worth all the cold. The snow and ice of the glacier provide unique corners, with frozen waterfalls, caves and narrow passages, which of course, require no less effort to get through.
The Franz Josef Glacier is located in Westland National Park , near the west coast of the South Island. The glacier is about 300 meters above sea level. Any trip has its starting point in a small town (of the same name) about 5 kilometers underlying to enter an area of temperate forest surrounding the glacier.
The Franz Josef glacier is growing at about one meter a year. Sadly, it is believed that it is shrinking. This is another great attraction of New Zealand, as well as the Fjords of Milford Sound, or the Tongariro National Park.
