Temples of Segesta and Selinunte

Sicily is a true treasure chest of art and culture. This fertile and strategic island has lived through the centuries, wherein various domination have left testimonies of great importance in history.

The Greeks, for example, colonized Sicily—bringing in civilization and art. Selinunte is located on the southwestern coast of Sicily. It was founded on the middle of the 7th century by people of Megara Iblea. The city became increasingly important, until its clash and destruction by the Carthaginians, who were the allies of Rome.

The ruins of Selinunte were remained hidden in time. But today, you can admire the testimony of political and religious buildings of the acropolis. Also the Temple of Hera.  Objects and sculptures were recovered from the hills and are guarded in the National Archaeological Museum of Palermo, except for the statue of Efebo Selinunte. This statue is one of the most typical examples of the Greek Sicilian art, which is in the Municipal Museum of Castelvetrano, near Selinunte.

Archaeological excavations have brought to light a magnificent Doric temple, probably from the 5th century. Dug out of the hill, the theater of Segesta was built in the 3rd century and is still well preserved. The structure in travertine could accommodate up to 3,000 people. If you would like to continue the tour of Greek Sicily, we advise you to visit the beautiful island of Mozia.
