Hiking in Skaftafell

Skaftafell is a part of the large Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland, uncommon to the climate in Iceland this region has many sunny days in summer and quite warm climate. It has scenic natural lands, with the natural birch wood of Bæjarstaðarskógur, where many species of birds inhabit the trees and fill the air with wonderful singing it is a marvelous place to go for hiking and enjoy the environment. Here, you can see an arctic fox, the small mink and a field mouse.


One of the most famous sites here is the waterfall Svartifoss, which means The Black Fall, the name comes from the black lava columns surrounding it, other popular destinations here are the glaciers Skaftafellsjökull and Skeiðarájökull. From here you can go and conquer the highest peak in Iceland, Hvannadalshnjúkur, there are local experienced guides who will help with  the climbing of the peak, there are many deep cracks in the ice or in the glaciers on the mountain, that is the reason why this climb is quite popular. There are also guides and travel companies who will take you on guided hiking trips to the glaciers and mountains nearby, there are also sightseeing flights over the glacier Vatnajökull, The Glacier of Rivers, this one is the largest in Europe. In the national park Vatnajökull is located the most powerful waterfall in Europa, Dettifoss. You can go there with skidoo and snowmobile tour or with a super jeep.

You can stay at the camp site at Skaftafell, or you can look for a nearby accommodation. There is an information center, where you can get information on tracks and paths. There are some hotels here and some service stations, where you can buy some good food for reasonable prices, there is also market in the station.
