The Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House, Sydney Opera House Jorn Utzon Australia

The Sydney Opera House is an icon and a symbol of Australia. Even those who dislike or do not know anything about opera pay a visit to this famous opera house. However, the story behind the structure is not so marvelous.

Strongly supported by Eugene Goossens, then director of the largest conservatory in Sydney, its design was selected from an international competition held in 1955. The architect was Jorn Utzon. The Danish architect then moved to Australia to look after the construction. The construction lasted for more than 10 years, from 1959 to 1973. Marked by financial, technical, and human  hardships, it led to the dismissal of Utzon.

When the opera house was inaugurated on October 20, 1973, it was in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II. Sadly, Utzon was not invited. It was only in 1999 that there was a final reconciliation between Utzon and the Opera, whose works were commissioned for modernization.
